BMA News - Your letters and emails
CEAs (clinical excellence awards) have been in the news continuously now for several months. They have become inextricably associated in people's mind with the financial crisis and with massive overspending in public services. They are the medical equivalent of greedy bankers' bonuses. The narrative is one Alastair Campbell would be proud of and one that will undoubtedly influence the review that is taking place and that is due to be published in the summer. This article and letters in various BMA publications suggest that the strength of feeling amongst doctors in the UK is predominantly against CEAs. This alone will ensure that CEAs in their present form or even maybe in any form will not survive. Whether this is a good or bad thing as far as what a consultant could or should accomplish is for another post.
